Work from Level 3 and Foundation

This is one of a series of paper cuts I created for FMP during Level 3 Art & Design. This one was concentrating on contours of a face. I like how the shape flows and leaves strong outlines around the mouth. This is not my favourite piece of paper cut, but it lead me on to make better pieces of the same style.

Another paper cut. This one was an abstract shape, which I went on to experiment with angular cuts and shape inside. This piece was cut in individual pages, leaving a very flat dent in the magazine. I wish this was bigger and could have been continued further.

This was the first paper cut magazine that I did. I took influence from Francesca Pastine, but tried to interpret the idea of a paper cut magazine in a different way. I took away pages in chunks, so the actual piece looks quite clunky and rough. I went on to remove lesser amounts of the pages at once, which gave a smoother finish and look. It was also more difficult to remove more than one page, so I had more trouble with ripping and accidental cuts to other layers.

Paper cut concentrating again on the face. Faces are abundant in fashion magazines, so it would be rude not to have taken advantage of the already defined shape.

This is probably the second magazine that I cut. I started to leave in pieces of images that I liked, which changed the shape that was left in the middle of the piece. This is another magazine in which I cut pages maybe 7-9 at a time, so looks quite rough and scrappy.

Yet another paper cut. Again, there are lots of faces in fashion magazines, and I liked to concentrate on them as I like the way the features stand out when the actual face is removed. That sounds a little psychotic.

Kate Moss paper cut. I tried something different with this piece. Again, I cut pages in chunks so there are very distinct levels, but tried to leave elements in, such as the eyes and mouth. I had to work back on myself to achieve this, placing the first cut away of the entire face over the top and lining up the features to make sure they were in the correct place. I planned to continue cutting away the entire of the face, but ran out of time.

This is probably my favourite magazine cut. I really like the shape, and love the images that I have left visible. It is unfinished, but I like it how it is. It is quite abstract and possibly surrealist. I tried to leave in facial features to look something like a melting face.

A piece of work from FMP Final Exhibition. This was loosely based on sea life and natural forms. It is somewhat abstract, and I really like the use of coloured paper in a rainbow formation. I used sticky foam tabs to elevate and leave space between layers. This caused a slight shadow, which adds to the depth of the piece.

And finally... A piece from the second project of Foundation. I was still looking at paper cut, but wanted to branch out with my use of materials. I studied trees and looked at the texture of bark, and tried to recreate this using a chunk of wood. I used chisels of various sizes and a mallet to carve out sections to give the wood texture. I then dyed it using two different shades of wood stain, then sanded parts off to add yet more texture. I don't think this photo does the piece justice. The texture and being able to feel the piece definitely adds to it.
